General rules of the battle

We wanted to welcome loopers from both worlds, the ones who only use 1 loopstation and the ones who like to geek a bit more with external devices but keeping it fair at the same time so we’re going back to our usual « loopstation plus 1 extra device » kind of battle. Each of the 2 participants will first do a 6 to 7 minutes showcase then they will face-off in a classic battle (3 to 3.30 minutes / 2 rounds per battler / eventual extra round also 3 to 3.30 minutes).
4 judges will separately vote in both parts of the competition by putting their favorite name in a box twice which means 1 vote for the showcase and one vote for the battle. If there’s a draw (1 wins the showcase and 1 wins the battle or if they tie in both) an extra round will be performed at the end of the battle part.

EQUIPMENT ALLOWED & REGULATIONS: there has to be limits, this is where we draw the line:

YOU CAN:

  • Perform with only 1 device as long as it’s a hardware unit and primarily a loopstation which means any loopstation in the market with or without onboard effects (any music brand and any loopstation model from any era as long as its primary designation is « loopstation/looper »).
  • Add an extra device which can be any hardware effect unit as long as it’s primarily an effect unit (not a synth with effects for example) or a second hardware loopstation.
  • Trigger sounds with your voice such as synth notes as long as you sequence them yourself, the limit being the arpeggiators included in units such as RC-505 MK2 which are allowed.
  • Use 1 midi controller as long as its only function is being a midi controller.
  • GBB21 pre-approved devices such as Helix products and BOSS sy1000 are also allowed.

YOU CANNOT:

  • Use softwares of any kind so no computer, no phone, no tablet, no loopy pro, no Ableton…
  • Use a 1st device that is not primarily designated as a looper so no sequencer that loops, no effect unit with a little looper inside, no synth with an onboard loopstation…
  • Use a sequencer of any kind or use a midi sequencing system. All song structures have to be live-looped and live-performed (No Mod Duo, no Bomebox …).
  • Use a second device that is not primarily an effect device or a looper so no sequencer, groove box or synth with onboard effects.
  • Use pre-made synth or instrumental sequences or pre-recorded sounds.
  • Use instruments of any kind, so no flute, no keyboards, no drums…. ONLY voice and mouth sounds or eventually voice triggered sounds as mentioned in the «YOU CAN » section.
  • Use any drum machine sounds or instrument sounds of any kind other than those defined in the «YOU CAN » section.
  • Use more than 2 devices.
  • Use a midi controller that can generate sound by itself so for example you cannot have a RC-505 as a controller if you already have 2 devices.
